Environmental Impact Assessment Training

In order to improve the standard of living of our communities, our foundation formed a partnership with the official conservation group (ACOSA) responsible for our local national parks and protected areas. Our goals was to provide them with professional training from national subject matter experts on evaluating environmental impacts from damages caused by companies and individuals. Funds gained from the environmental damage fees will be used to improve the infrastructure of our communities and conservation areas.

New Roof For Park Ranger Stations

Since mid-March this year, the travel industry in Costa Rica has been greatly affected by the Corona virus. On that month, Costa Rica closed its doors to all foreigners. Besides hotels and tour operators in our area, the people who work in the national park system was greatly affected since they also depend on visitors to fund their operations. Our foundation donated all the materials needed to replace the old, leaking roofs of two park ranger stations in order to improve the living conditions of the park rangers.

November 2020

Multiple roofs have been repaired including San Pedrillo Park Station and Caño Island Park Station. Now that the roofs are no longer full of holes, rainstorms are no longer keeping our park rangers awake. The local park management group (ACOSA) did an amazing job installing the new roof in time for the rainy season this year. There are still more roofs to install but we are grateful to have made so much progress this year.

Food Donations

Our food donations go directly to families with young children in our Drake Bay area. We are working with a local school to help distribute our food donations to families while meeting the COVID 19 protocols in Costa Rica.

Internet, Water & Power for Park Ranger Stations

The Costa Rica's tourism industry and national park system continue to be greatly affected by COVID-19. Due to our current national parks' funding crisis and ongoing government budget cuts, the people who work in the national park system lack basic services including internet service, potable water and power. Our foundation partnered with a third party to provide temporary internet access to two mayor ranger stations until the government of Costa Rica provides a permanent solution. We are also working to provide power to ranger stations using water turbines.

Community Work Exchange

We have completed over half the distance of a long and beautiful coastal trail between the community of Drake Bay and the Punta Rio Claro National Wildlife Refuge. It is the primary hiking trail in Drake Bay that was in desperate need of repair. We are extremely proud of all our volunteers from the Drake Bay area. They are doing an amazing job building bridges over streams, fixing the old path, and cleaning the coast along the way. Moving forward, the association is expected to complete approximately 1,800 hours of community work in exchange of $3,000 worth of donations per month.

Drake Bay - Rio Claro Trail

Our foundation formed a partnership with the local tourist guide association in Drake Bay to exchange hours of community work for food and personal care items for their members. The association is expected to complete 1,200 hours of community work in exchange of $2,000 worth of donations per month. This initiative is just starting this month. Some of the community work include cleaning our coastline, building new hiking trails, building metal garbage bins, and more.

Bridge Repair

With the help of 12 volunteers, our foundation repaired one of the main hanging bridges used by our community. The bridge was built over 20 years ago and had already rotted through in multiple locations. Click here to view a video of our bridge work.

Saving our Local Clinic

The rising sea level and intensified storms caused by the ongoing global Climate Change threatens to take away our existing medical clinic. There is a current project to build a new clinic, but it will take a while to complete. With the support of our foundation, a group of volunteers from our community built a concrete retaining wall and a new path in front of our local medical clinic to slow down the coastline erosion caused by the rising sea level . The clinic provides general medical services to 2,000 people in our Drake district (over five communities).

New Mattresses for Park Rangers

The greatest treasure on the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica, is its biodiversity. There are few places left on earth with such an abundance of natural beauty. But, in today's world, global biodiversity is constantly under threat. In order to protect the biodiversity and all the beauty that the Osa Peninsula has, we depend on the local park rangers. Many of them spend months, if not years, in some of the most remote ranger stations throughout the Osa Peninsula. Because of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, the organization responsible for these ranger stations, the Osa Conservation Area (ACOSA), has had their funds cut significantly and is facing great challenges in order to meet the basic needs for its park rangers.

 

Because of the extreme conditions where they live, many park rangers do not have adequate mattresses that provide comfort or support after a long day of work. Our foundation is working with Costa Rica’s Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications (MINAE) to donate 28 new high-quality, orthopedic mattresses to the hard-working rangers in the Osa Peninsula.

Repair and open the local high school

During the pandemic, the local high school in Drake Bay was shut down. Initially, it was due to public safety measures related to the pandemic. However, after the pandemic passed, other health and structural issues were discovered with the high school. The high was deemed inoperable by the government. Since march 2020, the local high school students have been unable to return to the classroom in Drake Bay. This may not seem very devastating considering that most children can take online classes. However, because so many children do not have a reliable access to the internet in Drake Bay, the effect of not returning to school for two years is truly devastating for the local children. 

We are working with the local community to repair the local high school to bring it back up to operable standards. As of June 2022, the necessary work to re-open has been completed. The local government now needs to approve the changes in order to re-open the school.
